>> this volunteer firefighters.responding to a fire scene near rochester new york were shot. tonight two firefighters are dead.two others.hospitalized in serious condition.but expected to survive. firefighters were not allowed to even battle the massive fire for nearly six hours this morning. that's because the fire scene quickly turned into a crime scene. right as the volunteer firefightrs were arriving on scene.police say he was waiting for the

volunteer firefighters to a rod.raw ifto arrive he was waig for the volunteer firefighters 62-year-old william spangler was perched like a sniper.firing off rounds towards the unsuspecting first responders. two were killed. 43 year old mike chiapperini who also served as the town's police department public information officer. and 19-year-old tomas kachoofka. kachoofka and chiapperini's son were best friends. two other firefighters who were shot are expected to recover. police say before dawn.the suspect, william spengler set a house and car on fire to lure the firefighters. as soon as they arrived, police say he started shooting. while police were looking for the shooter.the fire spread.engulfing 7 homes. the suspect was eventually found dead near the fire scene.after apparently shooting himself. and he was not even allowed to have a gun. spangler is a convicted felon.he was convicted of beating his 92-year-old

>> a new york man is playing the role of a real- life saint nick. michael sciaraffo, dressed in a red santa suit, delivered toys to kids affected by superstorm sandy on christmas eve. he collected the toys using social media. but, rather than donate them to charity, he decided to deliver them personally. this child unwrapped a doll house. this santa's list is made up of more than a hundred children from affected areas in brooklyn, staten island and queens. sciaraffo hopes to turn his program into a nonprofit and have another round of gift giving for easter.

>> residents of newtown, connecticut are trying to find some christmas joy in the middle of tragedy. the town is still reeling from the shooting that killed 26 people at sandy hook elementary more than a week ago. residents there say it's important to still celebrate the holiday. dozens of people are trying to pitch in and help comfort the community. a group passed out free hot chocolate, donuts and panda bears to kids on christmas eve. police officers in newtown will get today off to spend it with their families. officers from surrounding towns will cover their shifts. >> lefty o'doul's restaurant in san francisco has collected about six-thousand toys in a last-minute toy drive. the restaurant's goal for

>> former president george h-w bush is spending his christmas in a houston hospital. this is despite his doctors' hopes last week that he would be released by today. his doctors have not set a discharge date because they want to make sure he continues to build up his energy. been hospitalized for about a month after getting bronchitis. nelson mandela also remains hospitalized today. president is said to be looking much better and is in good spirits. mandela has been in the hospital since december eighth. recovering from a lung infection and the removal of gall stones. south african president wife and family at his bedside today to wish him a merry christmas.

>> there are a lot of fresh snow conditions. charles clifford has an update. kron 4's charles clifford conditions in tahoe. this is a caltrans camera along interstate 80 at the donner summit. the road is clear, but look at the piles of fresh snow one the sides of the road here. a couple miles away, same story near the the donner lake exit. now even though the 80 looks good at the moment, caltrans is screening trucks for snow chains eastbound at applegate and westbound in truckee. now let's take a look along highway 50 in south lake tahoe. again lots of fresh new snow, but the roads are

clear. maybe a little slick here. now, if you're headed to the mountains to go skiing. it's all good news. to the north, squaw valley and alpine meadows are reporting their second snowiest christmas on-record. in the past week squaw has received 70 inches of new snow. 220 inches in total so far this season. northstar has received 54 inches over the past 48 hours. to the south, heavenly also is reporting 54" of new snow just over the weekend. and finally this is a webcam view from kirkwood, which says it has received up to 84" of snow in the past week alone. now, the skies were clear monday afternoon, but more >> snow is forecast for the sierra starting on christmas day. news. 6:28 there was some wind earlier.

fitting up because of its age or its fitting, and the pipe to not meet. this resulted in 1000 of gallons per minute of water gushing out! elevating the street. >> it was level with the sidewalk. >> but it did not come over the sidewalk. >> a a portion for that will continue to continue. reggie kumar, kron 4. >> the search for a suspected drunk driver who escaped police by jumping into a rain-swollen creek has been called off-- for now. police stopped the man in the area of sir francis drake boulevard and college avenue around 12-30 yesterday morning. they say he ran off - and jumped into the corte madera creek. he swam away and they lost sight of him. the man hasn't been seen since.

rainfall forecast is a concern for this area, especially. this dept. will keep an eye on the area. the stormy weather caused a big tree branch to fall onto this san francisco gas station. it happened on portrero and defense 17th over the weekend. the awning of the 76 station was knocked over. no one was hurt. bay area news. two people were displaced by an apartment fire in menlo park. the fire was reported just before seven o'clock last night. after a grease fire spread to the ceiling of a resident's kitchen. the resident tried to put the fire out with baking soda. but when that did not work she left the apartment. the fire burned into the apartment above. as well as the attic. fire crews had the fire under control in about 15 minutes. the fire caused between 35- thousand and 40-thousand dollars of structural damage. no one was injured by the fire.

san jose police have released the name of the man who was stabbed to death at a graduation party friday night. 30-year-old steve bangalan died after being stabbed at a party being held in the office of an insurance agency owned by his cousin -- on oakland road. his death it is the 45th homicide this year in san jose. there are no suspects in custody. fleet will be right faceoff furan as we take a fee for outside flight fuel to take a look outside

still a pretty quiet drive. the bridges are clear, and no delays with light traffic on the approaches to the bay bridge. for the san mateo bridge. it is an easy trip in both directions. it is not set up for this commute but the holiday schedule for most transit agencies. they are on a weekend schedule toward the east bay is where there was an alert earlier. even however, during the collision, it did not shut down or have delays. it is clear, through dublin and towards the castro valley.
